Why I Want To Be A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Today’s mental healthcare is built on the principles of sincerity & acceptance. I consider it a privilege to be able to work as an Nurse in this new age of healthcare. Nursing is my passion. It is something I have always loved. I am able to give back to my community and promote health and wellbeing. It also allows me as a caregiver. What could be a more rewarding feeling than to support someone going through a difficult time of their lives? The stigma surrounding mental health meant that mental health was often overlooked for a long time. However, this is changing with education and outreach efforts. Today, doctors are able to not only treat people with mental illnesses with dignity and respect but also help them achieve their goals by providing holistic care and compassionate care. This is why I am a Psychiatric nurse practitioner. It is also my career goal. I am a nurse practitioner because of my 12 years of direct patient care experience, as well as my undergraduate degrees in Microbiology/Nursing. To provide holistic care for patients with trust and compliance, a nurse must be proactive. This is what I’ve learned. As a psychiatrist nurse practitioner, I will strive to make patients feel heard and understood. My twelve-year experience as a Registered Nurse in direct patient care has contributed significantly to my character and ability to help people and relieve suffering. I’ve had the pleasure of working with mental health patients in intensive care and medical/surgical units. Improper conceptions of mental health and the treatment options available have had a devastating effect on my own mental health. My professional career has also been filled with sub-optimal care caused by misdiagnoses for stigmatized disorder. These unfortunate incidents are always heartbreaking, but they have strengthened my resolve for psychiatric nurses to continue their education and to help others in desperate need. As a Psychiatric Practitioner, my goal is to be competent in diagnosing and treating common mental illnesses. I also want to provide holistic care. I want my ability to reach diverse populations. I also aim to become a leader in order to provide the best possible patient care and meet the emotional as well as physical needs of patients. This graduate program has helped me achieve all of these things. The learning experience I gained during my undergraduate studies and my experience at the patient’s bedside have made me more prepared to take on the demanding academic challenges of the nurse practitioner program. Long term, I want to help mental health patients in rural or poor communities. UAB School of Nursing is the best school for nursing graduate studies. They are known as leaders in both medical and nursing education. US News & World Report ranked UAB School of Nursing 18th in the nation for Master’s Degrees. The university’s ranking is amazing. I have had the chance to work with graduates of this university. I was impressed by their knowledge, dedication and hard work ethic which made it easy to make my decision. If accepted, I will proudly be a part of UAB’s School of Nursing. It will also help me reach my career goals.
